LIFE AT THE SPEED OF RADIO

For many Ugandans, the day doesn't begin until they’ve tuned in to Lucky Mbabazi on Capital F.M's breakfast show. As one of the most recognizable voices in Ugandan radio, Lucky has spent years captivating audiences with her vibrant energy and insightful commentary. She has become a trusted companion for listeners navigating busy streets, early mornings, and long commutes. But her influence extends beyond the airwaves. As the founder of Lucky's Groove Back, a wellness movement focused on fitness and holistic well-being, Lucky proves that she’s not just about talking the talk, she’s about walking the walk, or in her case, grooving it.

In my conversation with Lucky, I asked how she balances her time with everything she does. Her answer was simple yet profound. “I believe we have enough time for everything. It just has to mean a lot to you.” For her, prioritization is key. If something truly matters, you’ll make the time for it.

When we spoke about the future of radio, Lucky was clear in her belief in its enduring power. “Radio is still number one in the world, people are still listening to traditional radio,” she said confidently, before adding, “but to be safe, we have to evolve with the digital as well.” While she acknowledges radio’s unique position, she understands that adapting to the digital era is crucial for its continued relevance.

Lucky’s on-air style reflects her ability to adapt. She’s lively, relatable, and deeply connected to her listeners, blending the traditional strengths of radio with a modern, interactive edge. Her confidence in radio’s future is clear, it’s not about replacing the old but enhancing it with the new. In her journey, Lucky has demonstrated a rare ability to blend passion with purpose. Whether through the daily grind of radio, her wellness initiatives, or her engaging YouTube show, KaChai with Lucky, she’s built a multifaceted brand that connects deeply with her audience. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, she remains a steadfast figure in traditional media, never losing sight of the value in human connection.

For Lucky Mbabazi, staying true to herself, embracing change, and keeping the audience engaged isn’t just a job, it’s the rhythm of her life.

Azawi's Masterpiece

Sankofa: A Journey Through Love, Life, and Spirit Azawi's Sankofa is an emotional expedition. Borrowing from the concept of "retracing the past to inform the future," this project invites listeners to revisit familiar footpaths of love, spirituality, and the vibrant essence of being alive. With a unique soundscape rooted in Africa, Sankofa stands as a sonic celebration of what it means to feel, connect, and transcend. From the outset, Sankofa captures the highs and lows of love with tracks like "Egaali". The delicate instrumentation led by subtle Afrobeats percussion and wistful melodies emphasizes a sense of floating, a state of pure emotional elevation. In contrast, "Married Man" offers a more contemplative take. Azawi treads the complicated path of forbidden love with a mix of vulnerability and defiance. The production here is particularly noteworthy, a minimalist arrangement that lets her vocals shine, drawing listeners into the emotional tug-of-wa...

Joka's Gems

Joka is a Ugandan artist pushing the boundaries of Afrobeat and experimental music. His album, To Love is To Hate, showcases his ability to blend rich, atmospheric instrumentals with thought-provoking lyrics that explore themes of love, life, and conflict.  In tracks like "Rush," you get a front-seat-experience of his knack for crafting intricate rhythms and melodies. It's a rich blend of instrumentals and a beat pattern that keeps the listener guessing. The song starts with a moody synth that sets an atmospheric tone before layers of rhythm kick in, creating a dynamic flow that feels both spontaneous and deliberate. Joka’s vocals tie it all together, adding an emotional weight that balances the unpredictable rhythm. Though not on the album, "Kwata" featuring Thy'Medi and GEOXwill is another track worth lending an ear to in his discography. It's the kind of song that grabs a hold of you from the first beat and doesn't let go. Its infectious rhythms ...

JENESIS KIMERA : An Architect of Good Music

A year ago, I had my first conversation with Jenesis Kimera about his Risky Business EP, a project that, true to its name, reflected the risks and rewards of his artistic journey. Now, in 2025, we spoke again, this time about his latest release, Olaba Otya, featuring Yung Mulo. The conversation wasn’t just about the song, it was about growth, persistence, and what success means to an artist constantly pushing forward. For Jenesis, success isn’t just about numbers or financial gains. "Well, it’s getting people to listen to the music and making money, but also, it’s about the music. Releasing music is a win," he told me. That perspective defines his journey. Each release is a milestone, a testament to his dedication to the craft. We also touched on a common refrain among artists. The idea that "everything I create is my favorite." When asked about it, Jenesis answered in a way that felt both diplomatic and self-aware. It’s a tricky position to be in, b...
