Blacc Vibes

Lukas Blacc's latest EP, UG vibrations, is a nod to the Kampala Urban youth. In traffic jam, a dorm room in Livingstone hall, a hostel somewhere in kikoni, or an over- priced studio apartment, wherever the project might find itself playing, the sound will feel at home.

A detail you probably won't be able to unsee now is the Black, Yellow, and Red cover art colours, a shout out to the Ugandan flag. Let's get into the...

UG party kicks off the EP with an authoritative beat that will force, at the very least, a head bop out of you. Lukas linked up with Nutty Neithan on this one. Easily an anthem of the Kampala night life.

Don Corleone, featuring Navio, strikes a balance between modern Afrobeat elements and classic hip-hop storytelling. The production immediately grabs attention with its moody, bass-heavy foundation, setting a perfect atmosphere for the song's themes of power, ambition, and legacy. It’s a powerful addition to Uganda's growing urban music landscape. Smooth, and unapologetically bold.

With a catchy hook and an uplifting message, Stick to it , is another standout track from the EP. A powerful 2 : 40 seconds encompassing self belief and trusting your strengths. The track is a personal reassurance on Lukas' side, that naturally resonates with the listener.

Featuring Colombian singer Mila Egred, Saborcito has some of the best production on the EP. Could be a bias on my end because anything built on bass guitar accompanying a dragged kick has my heart.

In my conversation with Lukas, he described the collaboration as "smooth and seamless," noting that Mila easily connected with the "UG vibrations" concept. He attributed this understanding to the cultural and lifestyle similarities between South America and Uganda, and Africa more broadly, which made the creative process natural and relatable for both artists.

"Still Searching" delivers a smooth, introspective vibe, blending A Pass' captivating bro turn that sh*t uppp vocal melodies and reflective lyricism with Lukas' bars for days. The track floats on Ledra's mellow production of subtle Afrobeat grooves, and a soulful rhythm that creates a laid-back yet emotive atmosphere. Lyrically, it explores themes of searching for purpose and connection, resonating deeply with listeners navigating life's uncertainties. The clean, layered production allows each artist to shine. This one is a sonic gem for fans of Afro-fusion.

                                                                        Production

An impressive fusion of contemporary Afrobeat, hip-hop, and R&B sounds. Every track is built on a foundation of catchy, vibrant rhythms that pulse with energy, while the carefully layered instrumentation adds depth to each song. The EP captures a dynamic balance between smooth, emotive vocals and powerful beats, allowing Lukas to showcase his versatility as an artist.

Azawi's Masterpiece

Sankofa: A Journey Through Love, Life, and Spirit Azawi's Sankofa is an emotional expedition. Borrowing from the concept of "retracing the past to inform the future," this project invites listeners to revisit familiar footpaths of love, spirituality, and the vibrant essence of being alive. With a unique soundscape rooted in Africa, Sankofa stands as a sonic celebration of what it means to feel, connect, and transcend. From the outset, Sankofa captures the highs and lows of love with tracks like "Egaali". The delicate instrumentation led by subtle Afrobeats percussion and wistful melodies emphasizes a sense of floating, a state of pure emotional elevation. In contrast, "Married Man" offers a more contemplative take. Azawi treads the complicated path of forbidden love with a mix of vulnerability and defiance. The production here is particularly noteworthy, a minimalist arrangement that lets her vocals shine, drawing listeners into the emotional tug-of-wa...

Joka's Gems

Joka is a Ugandan artist pushing the boundaries of Afrobeat and experimental music. His album, To Love is To Hate, showcases his ability to blend rich, atmospheric instrumentals with thought-provoking lyrics that explore themes of love, life, and conflict.  In tracks like "Rush," you get a front-seat-experience of his knack for crafting intricate rhythms and melodies. It's a rich blend of instrumentals and a beat pattern that keeps the listener guessing. The song starts with a moody synth that sets an atmospheric tone before layers of rhythm kick in, creating a dynamic flow that feels both spontaneous and deliberate. Joka’s vocals tie it all together, adding an emotional weight that balances the unpredictable rhythm. Though not on the album, "Kwata" featuring Thy'Medi and GEOXwill is another track worth lending an ear to in his discography. It's the kind of song that grabs a hold of you from the first beat and doesn't let go. Its infectious rhythms ...

JENESIS KIMERA : An Architect of Good Music

A year ago, I had my first conversation with Jenesis Kimera about his Risky Business EP, a project that, true to its name, reflected the risks and rewards of his artistic journey. Now, in 2025, we spoke again, this time about his latest release, Olaba Otya, featuring Yung Mulo. The conversation wasn’t just about the song, it was about growth, persistence, and what success means to an artist constantly pushing forward. For Jenesis, success isn’t just about numbers or financial gains. "Well, it’s getting people to listen to the music and making money, but also, it’s about the music. Releasing music is a win," he told me. That perspective defines his journey. Each release is a milestone, a testament to his dedication to the craft. We also touched on a common refrain among artists. The idea that "everything I create is my favorite." When asked about it, Jenesis answered in a way that felt both diplomatic and self-aware. It’s a tricky position to be in, b...
